The subject of my magazine article is a fungus that is spreading globally and causing amphibian extinctions. I searched for inspiration for how to make the photos match the nature and mood of the article. I found inpiration in duotone images, gritty textures, and unnatural color schemes.

I used vectors including the gaze of the animals and the shapes of the body copy and other blocks to draw the eye across and down through the layout as well as back into the page.

I have an unusual use of hierarchy in my layout, but I wanted it to be a bit jarring in order to attract attention and shout at the reader about the human-caused epidemic causing extinctions around the world.
